John Fogerty wore a country-singer outfit — including a black cowboy hat and black cowboy shirt — when he performed at the South Street Seaport’s Pier 17 on Wednesday night. And he sang some country songs, like Hank Williams’s “Jambalaya (on the Bayou)” and Buck Owens’s “I Don’t Care (Just as Long as You Love Me),” with down-home flair. "A free concert-I only realized it was going down thins morning and hemmed and hawed about going---and then bit the bullet and went.

Meeting up with Lucy Anne who was having a abd day, we went to dinner then walked to the seaport where we stood waiting for the concert to start. A few minutes before it did some guy dressed in black cam walking by about five feet away- It was Fogerty looking like Johnny Cash.

A few minutes later he started playing with Linda Ronstadts's When will I Be loved. I walked Lucy to Brookstone before heading back to the concert which was very crowded.

He played lots of Creedence- and I either missed Down on the Corner or he didn't play it.
Everyone was singing Centerfield which he played on a guitar shaped like a bat.
He did a wicked good cover of John Denvers's Ain't it good to be Back Home Again.
His Fortunate Son had everyone screaming.
He alternated Bad Moon and Bathroom (pointing to the right) in the lyrics
I Loved Looking out My Back Door.
I loved Rock and Roll Girls

And you can't believe how loud a crowd can sing and how spastic white people can be then what happened during Proud Mary.Who needs to talk in tongues. (actually there was lots of white guys proving they can't dance tonight)

“He looks great, he sounds great,” muttered one disbelieving observer at John Fogerty's free concert last night at the South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan. Another wondered if the show was really live, since it sounded so single/album perfect.

I've been a Creedence Clearwater Revival fan since I found a Greatest Hits album in my mother's record collection long ago. I always hated the idea of them disbanding in turmoil in 1972. Singer, guitarist and primary songwriter John Fogerty wouldn't even sing those amazing swampy tunes for about 25 years. Instead, he started working under the name the Blue Ridge Rangers and released an album of covers in 1973, playing all the instruments himself. He decided that if he was ever going to do another Rangers album, he would be "getting some real guys to play on it." For The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again, saying that he has done that is an understatement.

On Wednesday night, rock legend John Fogerty performed a free show at New York's South Street Seaport and brought a mix of new songs, classics and a whole bunch of guitarists. The former Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman seamlessly shifted between country covers from his latest album, 'The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again,' and the guitar-heavy blues rock of his most popular work.

In Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fogerty often sounded like a country singer hiding out in a rock band, and he proved it on his first solo album, the 1973 covers disc The Blue Ridge Rangers. This long-delayed follow-up finds him backed by fiddles, mandolins, dobros and pedal steel guitar — not to mention guests like Don Henley and Bruce Springsteen — covering obscure chestnuts such as John Prine's wistful 1971 environmentalist anthem "Paradise." After the 1972 flameout of Creedence Clearwater Revival, ending its short reign as America's most popular rock band, John Fogerty launched a solo career in a surprising way. His debut effort was titled "The Blue Ridge Rangers" and consisted of country and folk-rooted songs he'd always loved. Suddenly without a band behind him, Fogerty played all the instruments and sang all the vocals himself. ¶ He didn't even put his name on it: The album jacket showed silhouettes of what appeared to be five guys wearing cowboy hats, playing guitars, fiddle and upright bass. John Fogerty, "The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again" (Fortunate Son/Verve Forecast)

Back in 1973, John Fogerty released an album of covers under the name the Blue Ridge Rangers. He played everything on the record, from guitars to drums.

"The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again" is Fogerty's return to the classics, covering favorites such as "Moody River," made popular in 1961 by Pat Boone, to tunes by John Prine and John Denver.

Fogerty's voice is twangy and countryish in all the right places, aided by a backing band playing lap steel, fiddle and mandolin.

The Eagles' Don Henley joins in on a smooth, harmony-laced version of Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party," while Bruce Springsteen adds his bluesy grit and call-backs of "that's what I'm talking about" to a version of the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved."

The album doesn't burst with the kind of unbridled rock 'n' roll howl Fogerty unleashed in Creedence Clearwater Revival, but shows off the 64-year-old's rootsy side, still full of soul.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: "You can't please everyone/ So you got to please yourself," sings Fogerty knowingly on "Garden Party," the best track of the album for its lyrics and retro references to Yoko Ono and others.
