John Rocked Deer Valley

Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 6:05 PM

The incredible shrinking chicken met up with Darlene somewhere between Salt Lake City and Park City and then proceeded to the Deer Valley resort to watch John Fogerty and his band rock like they have never rocked before. There was a stage set up near the lodge at the base of a big hill that looked like it was the end of a couple of ski runs. The hillside was covered with a bunch of people patiently waiting to hear some great swamp music. There had been signs at the box office stating that the area right in front of the stage was for standing, dancing, and enjoying yourself, but you were permitted to sit down if you so desired. Darlene and I found a nice spot right up front and a little off to the side so we wouldn't block the view of a few people who were temporarily sitting down. We were first treated to about 30 minutes of great music by Byron Friedman, the opening act and then John Fogerty took the stage. Woohoo! I hadn't heard that voice and guitar for over 6 months. It was great to get back on the concert trail. From the opening notes of Hey Tonight to the last notes of Proud Mary everybody was dancing, singing along and having a great time. I loved hearing Lodi and Gunslinger again, Pretty Woman is a definite crowd pleasing cover song, and Long As I Can See The Light was a really nice surprise. John was in a playful mood and really interacted a lot with the audience. I can't wait to see him again next month.

Nice review, Allen! Indeed, it was truly a blessing to get to a John Fogerty concert again and as always, the tiredness from the travel and lack of sleep has a way of magically disappearing when John takes the stage. The people we were around were super nice and everybody stood as soon as John took the stage. No one sat down the entire show and nothing but compliments from all around. I'm not sure if the set list was posted somewhere on the new site here yet. I'll check and if not I'll put that up for everyone to see. I'm afraid I lost the set list for the Spokane show....sorry!!!!!

Long As I Can See the Light, Grapevine and Night Time is the Right Time were definite big time, but John did a little of everything. Allen found three links to some great reviews and maybe he can post them here. We got to stand with a radio DJ from Salt Lake City. He told me that he makes a couple concerts a year and this was one of them he had to be at. He asked a few questions during the show about which album certain songs came from such as Gunslinger from Revival and Paradise from BRR Rides Again. He knew the songs, but did not remember the specific album. He also asked about the band members and was truly surprised at how strong John's voice was and the sound of the band. Great guy to share the show with.

John looked his youthful self with his blue plaid shirt on and jeans. He interacted with the audience a lot. The stage was only about a foot high so everyone was almost eye level with him. The baricade kept people away from directly standing in front of the stage, but John made a point of jumping onto the ground and coming right up to the audience to shake hands and talk. He also walked on top of some speakers to get closer and play guitar and talk. He also came to the audience with mike in hand for Midnight Special and held it to both the left and right of the stage so everyone could sing the opening word.......W EEEEEE LLLLLLLLL!. I was so off tune it was pathetic, but sure had a good time trying!!
He also took the mic from its stand during Have You Ever Seen the Rain and walked to both ends of the stage singing without playing guitar. He again talked about writing this song years ago about the breakup of his band, CCR, and how it was a sad song because he was sad. Then he told the story of how he does not feel that way anymore because the song has a rainbow in it and it reminds him of his young daughter, Kelsey.

I remember my face again hurting from smiling so much. I am still never so happy as when at John's shows. Europe will no doubt again be treated to Mr. Magic in full force. Canada get ready, my friends. I can't wait for that to start up and for the rest of the U.S. shows!!!

Glad to see the forum is back up and look forward to all the reviews and great comments!!!

Hey MN NICE, I will be at Moondance Jam for sure. I might be at Thunder Bay if I can find a ticket and if I get another one of my "bad coughs" that forces me to call in sick.
