Murphys Yesterday
Darlene and I just got back to the Sacramento airport from Murphys so this will be short and sweet. But hopefully we can add more tomorrow--or actually later today when we get home. Darlene and I arrived at the winery in the afternoon. We soon ran into Bootleg and his wife. We ate dinner together, sampled some wine and then headed to the show. Mr. Arlo Guthrie opened with a stellar set including the Steve Goodman classic "City of New Orleans". Then it was Fogerty time! Woohoo! John did his standard set with a few surprises such as Blue Moon Nights and Gunslinger thrown into the mix to keep us guessing which song would be next. Shane did a wonderful job on guitar. I really need some sleep so that is all for now. Rock on John! Rock on Canada! The September tour is just around the corner!

Re: Murphys Yesterday
Hello all. Well I was about to hit the submit button when my computer blinked and the whole post went into the black hole. So let me start again...
I had about 6 hours of sleep over the prior 33 hours, maybe more, before John took the stage at the winery in Murphy's, CA. The drive up from the Sacramento airport to Murphy's, CA was pretty with roads that twisted and turned through wheat fields and other crops. Allen and I both were somewhat concerned of what the drive back to the airport would be after the show in the dark, but in the end all worked out good.
It is amazing how John did not show any wear and tear from the long Europeon tour and the two night's previous shows. He looked fresh and his voice actually had some of that Fogerty growl going on during a few of the songs. He was happy, waved and talked to folks in the crowd and as usual seemed very grateful to the people who were there. The winery amphitheater I was told held about 7,000 people. Looking around, I'd say it was very close to sold out.. it could have been. There were chairs set up in the premium package tickets with a baricade that prevented the audience from going right up to the stage. Then there were more seats behind that with a grassy area that people could sit on that went pretty far back from the stage.
A beautiful place for a show, for sure. Just in the middle of nowhere, but that may have been part of the charm. Anyway, John took the stage around 9:20pm after Arlo guthrie performed the opening act starting at 8pm. His son, Shane, played the entire show as he did in Europe and definitely adds, I think ,a really good presence on stage with John. he and his dad "tore it up on guitars" with Old Man Down the Road. Shane looked truly comfortable playing and also had some other moments with John and James playing together. I don't know what John sounded like playing guitar during his younger years, but I honestly don't know if he was any better than Shane is at this stage. Can't believe I'm saying that, but it's true. Shane is that good!!!
So before the computer could get another spell, let me post the set list for yall:
Hey Tonight
Green River
Who'll Stop the Rain
Lodi - crowd went nuts over this song since Lodi was not that far away.
Lookin' Out My Back Door
Ramb le Tamble
Blue Moon Nights
Born on the Bayou
Hot Rod Heart
Midnight Special
Long As I Can See the Light
Keep on Chooglin'
Have You Ever Seen the Rain
Pretty Woman
Heard It Thru the Grapevine
Gunslinger
Down on the Corner
Centerfield
Old Man Down the Road
Bad Moon Rising
Fortunate Son
ENCORE
Up Around the Bend
Proud Mary
Allen and I kinda took turns standing in the front row as did Dan and his wife, Carol. Most of the crowd really looked like they wanted to stand but were afraid. A lady I spoke to after the show said that security had told some people in the 2nd row if they continued to stand, they would be escorted out. I think since we tried to take turns, it may have saved us. Not gonna focus on that, though, because all had a great time judging by the singing and compliments once again being heard as we headed for the car when the show was over. There were a number of first time John Fogerty concert goers and they were truly stunned at his performance. I was too again cause I don't know how he consistently does what he does and keeps the shows at through the roof levels.
I'll comment some more, but I want to hit the submit button before something goes crazy again. Peace....

RE: Murphys Yesterday
Hey Robert. The guitar players along with John was Dave, James and Shane. When John introduced Shane as "Shane Fogerty" after Old Man Down the Road, I looked around and explained to several people in our immediate area that Shane was John's son. They helped spread the word and it was really cool seeing the expressions and hearing the positive comments about how nice that is. A couple ladies told me they knew that had to be John's son because he looked like John. Chip off the ole' block as the saying goes....
Da River Boat Queen [smile) - u r right about the surroundings. Everyone on this list would have loved it. The room where the food was served had a wooden roof with a beautiful chandalier hanging from it. They had vintage pumps, cars, etc. scattered throughout the grounds from like around the 1920's or so. When Allen and I went to look for Dan and carol, we had to walk down a steep, rocky trail to a parking lot from the grounds. Really cool place that I wish I would have more time (and energy) to explore around. It took a good two hours to drive to from Sacramento, some of it on backroads and through what was supposed to be "small" town kinda places. I commented I wonder where they do grocery shopping and down the road several miles was a small store. Peaceful, for sure. The wine tasting before the show would have been nice, but operating on very little sleep with John's show coming up, I decided not to do that.
There are always a number of really neat moments at John's shows. John recognized some man who was in the front row and spoke to him a couple of minutes. Could not hear what they were saying but John was obviously happy to see him. John reached out his hand to shake the man's, but the distance from the stage was little too far for them to actually accomplish that, so John and he did an "air" handshake. One time when I turned around to see the crowd behind, someone was holding a sign up that said "I listened when you was The Blue Velvets." I don't think John had chance to see it cause right as I had looked around, two security guys were making the person put it down.
I love it when John stands either directly or pretty close in front of you where you can watch his guitar playing so close. I could just watch him play for hours like that without any singing. I noticed when Shane was playing (I think it was while he was doing a solo on Old Man) that he did that quick sliding of the left hand down the neck of the guitar. Gosh, that drives me crazy (in a good way) when John does that. It's hard to explain but it is a really quick kinda movement that is so cool to me. And, of course, the finger pickin' at the very beginning of KOC. That continues to be an always "wow" moment. I noticed that John seemed to have a new guitar, at least one I haven't noticed before on one of the songs. I hate to say it but I should have wrote it down on the set list. I thought I would remember what song and the type of guitar, but the CRS (can't remember _ _ _ _)syndrome definintely applies to me!!! But it was a good lookin' guitar. I would bet he used it in Europe so maybe someone from over there might know more.
More later and hopefully Dan will get to a computer soon and give his view. He and Carol were going to do some driving around on there way back to the L.A. area.

Re: Murphys Yesterday
Okay yesterday at 6:53 pm Daniel Thomas Smith was born we are so happy 7lbs 14oz 18 inches he seems very healthy. Now at the Murphy’s show some folks just sat it is so hard for me to sit, I had too because the guy next to us wanted to sit and he whined and I almost asked him if he wanted some crackers with that whine, anyhow we rocked on our chair’s. I’ll never understand how a person can sit at John Fogerty show. Venues should lower the first couple rows or have a dance area center stage so folks can dance. Regardless of that it was great show people just had to smile John rocked the vineyard. Darlene posted the set list all the songs sounded great I enjoyed Long As I can See the light with the key boards very soulful.

Congrats Grandpa Bootleg Dan and Grandma Carol! Woohoo! I'm glad the grandbaby decided to wait long enough for y'all to enjoy the Murphys show and the Tahoe weekend. Is it time yet for the Halifax show? Inquiring chickens want to know. I wonder if Shane will be able to play Canada or if he will be back at college.
