Phoenix, AZ show

Sat, Oct 20, 2012 at 1:18 AM

Hey everybody:

Yall know the score. It is late, early morning flight, not enough sleep....ha! But time enough to say a few words about John's performance tonight in Phoenix at the fair. I have never been to this event, but it is huge. The venue where John played was sold out according to a lady I spoke with after the show. And thank you to the folks that attended - it was as a John Fogerty show should be - those that stood which was the majority did and had a blast and those that chose not to do so enjoyed themselves all the same.

I noticed that this crowd was again a vast spread of ages - from teenagers to seniors. And they all were enjoying themselves. And how could you not!!!! John was in his zone tonight (not surprisingly) and conjured up another youthful, energetic, rockin' good time. I must say the highlight just from a surprise standpoint with songs for me turned out to be Penthouse Pauper. I had only heard this song one other time years ago live and had no clue he would do it tonight. And it was a rockin' bluesy version that was super!!! Wow.....really surprised and really happy he did this. I did not get to hear the Bayou Country album on the Canadian tour so missed this song, so super sweet to hear this tonight.

Show started on time at 7:00 pm. Lights went out and Almost Saturday Night played. When this song finished, the band took the stage first and then John came on and went into Hey Tonight. Dana and his wife Sue was at tonight's show and Dana commented after the show ended something I had also noticed during the concert. John had some facial expressions that I remember seeing him with back during the Creedence years. It was funny when Dana mentioned this because I was thinkin' the same thing. Anyway, was really youthful lookin' and fun to see. I can tell you the audience was into the show from start to finish and why not. John is such an entertainer and his performance tonight truly gave everyone more than what they expected. Many comments about John's guitar playing and how awesome he was and just plain fun with the set list of songs everyone enjoyed. John's vocals were strong probably most evidenced when he did Long As I Can See the Light.

So, following the opening of Hey Tonight, then Green River the rest of the set list was:

Who'll Stop the Rain
Looking Out My Back Door
Hot Rod Heart
Ramble Tamble
Born on the Bayou
Penthouse Pauper
Midnight Special
Grapevine
Long As I Can See the Light
Gunslinger
Keep on Chooglin
Have You Ever Seen the Rain
Pretty Woman
Centerfield
Down on the Corner
Bad Moon Rising
Fortunate Song

ENCORE SONG
Proud Mary

We all know John does at least two encore songs. Dana and I agreed that there had to be some sort of time constraint with the one song tonight. The show was scheduled to end at 8:30 and it was a little past that when Fortunate Son was finished. Plus, I noticed that Kenny did not waste any time with the intro's from one song going in to the next. Definite some sort of schedule that had to be adhered to. John did not do a lot of talking tonight and I think this was a factor in his moving along with the show. John did do some finger pointing into the audience with some of those that were yelling to him and dancing. His smile is so much fun to see when he is communicating with his audience. Again, there was a lot of dancing and singing along tonight even with security dancing to some of the songs. I commended one of the security guys after the show and we high fived each other as a cool way of showing how much we enjoyed the concert.

The place was packed and Dana commented that it reminded him of the Oakland Coliseum show. When I looked around, I could not disagree. Great crowd tonight and the place was full.

Well, that's all for now. Thanks to the Phoenix folks for a super time and for enjoying a John Fogerty concert the way it should be. And of course, mega thanks to John and band for giving another unforgettable show. Allen you missed it!!!

Thanks for the nice review Darlene. It sounds like I missed another great Fogerty concert. I don't know if I'm more bummed about not seeing John and the band or not seeing Dana's lovely wife Sue. But I'm glad y'all were able to have fun rockin' out with some fine swamp music in the Arizona desert.

Darlene I sure wish we could have been there with
    you and Dana & Sue.
I'm glad John finally got to Arizona after having to
cancel the show because of a sore throat a few years
    ago.
    I miss all of you.

A big thanks to my buddy Darlene for another one of her always outstanding and detailed reviews of John's show Friday night at the AZ State Fair in Phoenix.

Sue and I had a Friday afternoon flight from LA and with John's show starting at 7:00 pm we had to rush to the venue straight from our arrival at Sky Harbor Airport. When we finally got into the massive Veterans Memorial Colisseum on the fairgrounds, John was already into his second song. We spied Darlene rocking out in the front row and security didn't object when I ran up to say hi to her. She surprised us by offering to share an extra front row seat that she had acquired. Wow! We agreed that Sue and I would take alternate turns in the front row with Darlene. We made our way to our own reserved seats a few rows behind and Sue told me to take the first shift for the front row experience.

I can sum up my opinion of the show with a simple non-grammatical phrase: John Fogerty just keeps getting awesomer and awesomer!! His voice was stronger and clearer than I have heard it in concerts over the last several years. And his guitar playing - wow - you should have heard the way he was stretching out on songs like Hot Rod Heart! I know that John duets with ace guitarist and country music superstar Brad Paisley on the recording of that song for John's upcoming album. I'm thinking that John has taken a cue from Brad from the sizzling guitar work he displayed in the middle break of HRH. Like I said, awesome!

John seemed to me to be in really good humor at this show - throughout his performance I saw him flash that grin that he was so identified with during his Creedence days. I felt a little like I had stepped back in time to 1970! If John could bottle his secret of youthful energy he could quit the music biz and retire on the fortune he would make from "Fogey Tonic"! :-).

So a big THANK YOUUU to Darlene for letting us share her front row seat, and a huge THANK YOUUUUU to Mr. Fogerty for letting us share his immense talent and timeless music!

    Dana
