Fogerty, Full Moon Delight at Bluesfest

John Fogerty and a brilliant full moon were the stars of Day 3 of the 23rd annual Byron Bay Bluesfest on Saturday.

The Mojo Tent was the preferred venue for most punters as the full moon rose over Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm but several Saturday sets were again marred by sound dramas.

Seasick Steve and Brian Setzer's Rockabilly Riot! both endured production problems during their sets in the Mojo Tent. Like Buddy Guy on Good Friday, both handled the dramas with grace and professionalism. These things happen -- but they're happening too often and taking too long to fix.

Fortunately, the problems were rectified before Saturday night headliner John Fogerty took the stage to perform Credence Clearwater Revival album Cosmo's Factory from start to finish.

The 1970 album boasts wonderful tracks including Lookin' out My Back Door, Travelin' Band, Ooby Dooby, Run Through the Jungle, Who'll Stop The Rain and Heard It Through the Grapevine.

The ecstatic crowd could happily have turned on its heels after hearing the masterful album but Fogerty wasn't done yet. Beaming and obviously thrilled with the audience's response, he then ripped his way through a selection of the Creedence's ridiculously rich treasure trove of classics including Born on The Bayou, Proud Mary, Midnight Special, Bad Moon Rising, Fortunate Son and Have You Ever Seen the Rain.

For decades, Fogerty -- the man behind Credence's unique vocals and rocking guitar sound -- steadfastly refused to perform the band's catalogue as part of a royalties dispute. But that was then. And he is now.

''I met a beautiful girl called Julia -- she's standing over there -- and it's because of her I'm standing here singing these songs for you,'' Fogerty told the crowd, before a heartfelt rendition of Long as I Can See the Light.

Fogerty returns to the stage on Monday night to perform another classic Credence album, 1969's Green River, from start to finish for what is sure to be a wonderful finale to the five-day festival.

Other standouts on Day 3 included Bluesfest regular Angelique Kidjo, French multi-instrumentalist Yann Tierson (who backed up again today), the David Bromberg Quartet and the rocking Joanne Shaw Taylor, who plays the Crossroads Stage again on Monday.
